About

The goal of GORAZD – the Old Church Slavonic Digital Hub is to provide access to the results of Czech Paleo-Slavonic Studies lexicographical research. This goal was achieved by retro-conversion and digitization of the existing printed dictionaries as well as the digitization of a unique collection of the Old Church Slavonic citation slips which served as a base for the realization of the Dictionary of the Old Church Slavonic Languagein four volumes published in the second half of the 20th century. The result of the project is the creation of a free electronic dictionary hub based on  lexicographical material that has been collected by the Slavonic Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic for the following works: The Dictionary of the Old Church Slavonic Language (Slovník jazyka staroslověnského), the Dictionary of the Oldest Old Church Slavonic texts (Slovník nejstarších staroslověnských památek) and the Greek-Old Church Slavonic Index (Řecko-staroslověnský index). In this manner the permanent digital preservation of the data is ensured. Moreover, the developed software tools enable us to expand, revise and innovate the lexicographical content and keep the level of research updated.

Within the framework of the GORAZD Project, were developed three specialized tools to automate the digitization process for all kinds of reference works (i.e. dictionaries and encyclopaedias). These tools are the: Gorazd Generator, Gorazd Editor, Gorazd Export. These tools are available as freeware licenced by GNU GPL and they are compatible with INVENIO – open source framework dedicated to the management of digital assets developed by CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). This library system is adapted to the special needs of Old Church Slavonic language dictionary management and are used as a platform to access the digitized dictionaries compiled under the GORAZD Project. The contents of these databases are published for end users via the Gulliver presentation system developed by AiP Beroun.

For the displaying of Old Church Slavonic texts, the GORAZD Project uses the Unicode compatible font CyrillicaBulgarian10U which was kindly provided by prof. Anna-Mariya Totomanova from the University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski", the leader of the project Cyrillomethodiana

The project was implemented thanks to the NAKI II programme at the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic (DG16P02H024). The grant was running for the period of 2016-2020. The recipient of the grant was the Slavonic Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the head researcher is PhDr. Štefan Pilát, Ph.D. The delivery of the INVENIO digital library framework, the Gulliver presentation system and technical support is being provided by AiP Beroun.
